In April 2018, President James Jones, PRP of the National Association of Parliamentarians issued a proclamation to declare the month of April as Parliamentary Law Month. This proclamation served as a call “to districts, associations, units, and all members to observe the month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities as a way to create the future and bring our mission and vision into reality.”
The Parliamentarians of Brooklyn, NY took this task on and conducted several Parliamentary Procedure workshops at middle & high schools throughout the borough of Brooklyn. On April 12, 2019, I took to the classroom with my colleague Taniqua Hunter, RP and the support of various other members of PBNY to teach a module on Parliamentary Basics at the Brooklyn High School for Global Finance in Bedford Stuyvesant. Together, we taught a group of 15 high school students the basics of Robert’s Rules and how to run effective meetings. This was a very interactive workshop compromising of a teaching module and a practicum in which students got to practice what they learned. At the end of the module, students learned how to bring business before an assembly and how to proceed through the process of handling a motion. This workshop was well received by the students as well as their teacher and Principal who were also present for the workshop. (Photos from the event are included below)
